Carnelian is one of July's birthstones. It is a type of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) that is usually heat-treated to darken its color. Sterling silver is an alloy made of at least 92.5% silver. The other 7.5% is usually copper. I choose to use sterling silver instead of plated metal because it is my experience that plating rubs off over time. Solid sterling silver, with a little care, can last a lifetime. Fine silver consists of at least 99.9% silver, so it is in essence pure silver.
